Project Nightlight

[in production]

Earlier in 2019, three women lost their lives in the hands of strangers. So during the annual Open Innovation Competition held by the City of Melbourne, they wanted to tackle the year’s biggest issue: safety on the streets. Shortlisted teams and start-ups from different disciplines came together to pitch their solutions to a panel of judges. We won second place, but the City of Melbourne decided to turn our humble idea into reality.

Creative Director: Andrew Hankin | Art Director: Simon Dall | Behavioral Scientist: Dane Smith

As seen on: The Age, Concrete Playground, Broadsheet, Pedestrian, TimeOut, and Dan Andrews’ Facebook post.

The most dangerous parts of Melbourne all have two main issues: lack of light and lack of people. We needed a way to protect the people of Melbourne, without losing the city’s vibrancy.

Introducing Project Nightlight: creating safety and comfort in the darkest of places.

We’ll transform forty laneways across the CBD, Carlton and North Melbourne into a stunning feast of light — inviting crowds and increasing natural surveillance to help prevent crime.

But these installations are more than just art, they're made to alter your behaviour. We’ll work with behavioural scientists and local artists to create sculptures that can naturally reduce aggression through colour, shape, and interactivity.

As the cultural capital of Australia, Melbourne is no stranger to art. Now art can keep the city safe.
